Christmas Eve 2009 Slideshow

Together, we celebrated how a baby changed everything. What a great Christmas Eve Celebration at NORTHLAND CHURCH today!

” So the Word became human and made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen His glory, the glory of the Fathers one and only Son.” (John 1:14, New Living Translation)

Dad and I worshipped at the first of five services at Northland today — at noon. We usually go a bit later in the day and enjoy the crowds. We’re in no hurry. Going early was my choice because I leave for URBANA’09 tomorrow and wanted to be home this evening.

I have been doing the church thing for my whole life and have struggled at the planning table with other creative minds trying to find a fresh way to share a well-worn story. Funny thing about this story, it really doesn’t need our help. I’m grateful that those who design worship at Northland seem to be committed simultaneously to a kind of creative programming excellence that brings fresh ideas and tries new things and also to a kind of God-centered and Word-centered simplicity that does not let the main thing get lost in all the bells and whistles. Or, in the case of Northland, the lights and musicians.

This year the thing that most evoked in me a worship-filled response was the instrumental music while there was Scripture projected on the wall. Now it was way more techno-coolness than power point and a tape player (way more musician-coolness, too), but essentially it was music and word.

Can’t say there was a part I didn’t find meaningful. For me, this was not the culmination of the Christmas season so much as the kick off of the URBANA season. Sweet!!
