My close call with #URBANA09 security personnel

I’d barely arrived at the America’s Center in St. Louis on the opening afternoon of URBANA’09 when I ran into Karen Young in her nifty Wal-Mart greeter blue vest. She was hanging around…er…working as a volunteer. She was the first of many Faith* people I ran into through the week. I think I saw her every day.

Later in the week, Karen approached me to show me that she’d turned in her blue vest for a walkie-talkie and a team of volunteers who she got to boss about as they worked to keep URBANA participants safe as they moved about the city. She was quite pleased with herself for the promotion. I was, frankly, a bit frightened.

The next day she came by the Wycliffe booth where I was busy talking to Jenny Swim. Karen had added a green-yellow reflector vest to her uniform and, well, I’m not sure what I said to her, but next thing you know I was under arrest by the crazy URBANA’09 security lady.

Okay, that’s a bit of an exageration I suppose. Still, there for a moment I was wondering how I’d explain this to my team.

If you look in the background of the photo, you can see that none of them are surprised, let alone interested. What does this say?

All rather disturbing, wouldn’t you agree?!

*Faith Church in Indianapolis is my home sweet home. Faith people were found among speakers/seminar leaders, organizational staff as mission reps, volunteers, participants and even the Grand Poobah of Urbana himself, Jim Tebbe.

Really quite cool.

ALSO, thanks to Adam Jeske who took this photograph and  then made it (and others) available on his Picassa Web Album.

I’ve passed along your ‘citizen’s complaint’ to CCI staff who managed the event. Waiting for reply from them but suspect it will be something like, “Given what she did, she’s lucky not to be in handcuffs in this photo.” 🙂

So many captions could be added to this.

“You can try but you can’t out run God”

“URBANA…we’ll put the fear of the Lord in ya!”

Ruth: “Why…why…is there no starbucks here?”
Karen: “Guys, we have a serious problem down here”

    LOL 🙂
