I am grateful for the creativity that takes something familiar — even takes a few layers of familiar — and makes it something new.

When I first listened to this piece I was simultaneously comfortable and uncomfortable.  The comfort I experienced came from the fact that I know both of these musicians and trust their musical gifts, their musical integrity. I know both of these instruments. I know this song well enough to sing along. These factors created an environment in which my guard was lowered. Both my mind and my heart were relaxed.

And then the new came. At first it was awkward to me and I wanted them to “just do it right.” But, because I do trust them in this arena, I chose to not kick against it. And, as I leaned into this new expression of an old idea, I found delight and beauty that was new and good.
