I’m not sure how long this will continue, but starting tonight I intend to periodically take a portion of Psalm 119 and personalize/paraphrase it. This is simply a personal exercise done in public.
1 Joyful are people of integrity,
who follow the instructions of the Lord .
2 Joyful are those who obey his laws
and search for him with all their hearts.
3 They do not compromise with evil,
and they walk only in his paths.
4 You have charged us
to keep your commandments carefully.
5 Oh, that my actions would consistently
reflect your decrees!
6 Then I will not be ashamed
when I compare my life with your commands.
7 As I learn your righteous regulations,
I will thank you by living as I should!
8 I will obey your decrees.
Please don’t give up on me!
So…if I want to experience joy that is deep and lasting, I must be a person of integrity, following the teachings and direction of Jesus Christ inwardly and outwardly.
I will find joy as I do everything in my power to seek out His way for my walking — engaged in the venture with my mind and my emotions.
I will not give up or give in. I won’t take another path that looks just as good or maybe shorter or easier. In my saying YES! to following Christ, I will be saying NO! to following any other way.
God is the One who puts it before me to intentionally and carefully follow His Son.
It is my prayer that the things I do (say, think, refrain from doing, etc.) would be so in step with God’s laws that my living could serve as instruction in the law itself.
When I live this way, I feel no shame when my life is set beside the plumb line of God’s standard. I’ll line up.
As I grow in my understanding of God’s good and right regulations, I will express my gratitude through my obedience.
I will. I choose. I will. Please, God, don’t give up on me while I work to live up to that standard.
