Reflections on Psalm 1

Psalm 1

NLT

Oh, the joys of those who do not
follow the advice of the wicked,
or stand around with sinners,
or join in with mockers.

But they delight in the law of the Lord,
meditating on it day and night.

They are like trees planted along the riverbank,
bearing fruit each season.
Their leaves never wither,
and they prosper in all they do.

But not the wicked!
They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind.

They will be condemned at the time of judgment.
Sinners will have no place among the godly.

For the Lord watches over the path of the godly,
but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.

Psalm 1

*RDH*

People who are filled up with joy don’t listen to the crazy people
who have distanced themselves from God and God’s truth.
JOY people don’t turn to the God-rebellious for suggestions on how to live
nor do they try to blend in with the mockers by perfecting their mocking-skills.
JOY people don’t seek mentors among the mockers.

JOY people wallow in God’s Word and God’s way.
They breath and eat and sleep God’s truth.
24/7 they look at the world through God-glasses
and weigh & measure everything on God-scales.

JOY people resemble big, strong, life-filled and life-producing trees.
Beautiful. Shade-sharing. Fruit-bearing. Godward-pointing.

The opposite of the JOY people are the WICKED. No joy here.

WICKED people resemble the parts of plants no one wants, that no one can use.
They blow away in the wind without ever having contributed at all.

WICKED face condemnation — judgement.
The fact that they wasted themselves, making themselves useless to others,
will leave them separated from God’s JOY.

Both the JOY people and the WICKED walk the pathway of existence.
For the WICKED, the final destination is destruction.
For the JOY people who are walking with God,
their destination and their journey are WITH GOD
and so it just keeps getting better with each step.
