Romans 5:1-2 from The Message:

1 By entering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us—set us right with him, make us fit for him—we have it all together with God because of our Master Jesus. 2 And that’s not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand—out in the wide open spaces of God’s grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.

Peter sang this as our worship began last weekend at Northland. I liked it quite a lot. The real impact came for me when I read Romans 5:2 as it was projected on the screen.

I was reminded of a conversation years ago with a friend from a book club I was in for about a decade. We’d read C.S.Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia and she was commenting on a scene in one of those stories where the girls are relating to Aslan that they had been calling out for him to come for such a long time and he lets them know that in reality he is the one who called for them.

She was struck by that scene because she’d just lived it our in her relationship with Jesus.

She and her husband had come to a decision to find a church and get involved there because it would be a good thing, especially as they were adding children to their family. Through that process, she came to know Jesus in a way she’d not known him before and trusted in him for salvation. She thought she was pursuing God until she came face to face with Him and discovered that He is the one who had been pursuing her.

Listening to the lyrics of this song and reading the passage paraphrased by Eugene Peterson in The Message, I found myself — once again — amazed that God pursues me and calls me into the perfect place with Him. Oh how easily I lose sight of that beautiful reality.
